A home on the Dalmatian coast – built by Eham’s expert craftsmanship, and inspired by the authentic architecture of the regional coast.

The research began on site.

The research began on site. The region has a long tradition of stone-working. Some 400 years ago, white limestone was already being shipped from here all over the world. In conversations with local stonemasons, architects and craftsmen, our team was able to deepen our knowledge of Dalmatian architecture. In the process, we came across some antiques. Maybe the massive stone fountain was once intended as a drinking trough for a village square. Now it serves as a sink in the wine cellar – and cools the white wine. The best vintages are presented behind glass. The vaulted architecture of the cellar looks as though it is a hundred years old and shows why the property has been compared to a Špilja, the Croatian word for cave.

The kitchen is ideal for cooking Croatian food. There are always pepperoni and onions from the adjacent garden at hand. The cooking tools are not hidden in cupboards. They hang openly from the wrought-iron kitchen rack. Many components of the project were manufactured directly on site. For metalworking, we relied on the experience of the Lippkau company from Warngau. Eham has a long-standing friendship and working relationship with Wolfgang and Georg. Their quality is evident in the details, for example in the many handmade door fittings or in the hooping of the butcher’s block. Meat and fish can be prepared for a host of friends on the massive platter.

The long oak table in the attached living and dining area offers enough space for everyone. The wooden benches are kept simple. The taste of the heavy red wine perfectly matches the feel of the old oak wood. Not only large parts of the furniture – but also beams, doors and numerous details of the Casa are made of old wood from the region. Along with the ever-present limestone and wrought-iron details, oak is a mainstay design element of the house. The salvaged wood is finished to preserve the dark coloring and patina that has developed over decades.

A set of French doors leads from the dining room to the outdoors. The distinctive round arches are inspired by the large barn doors of the region. When it gets dark outside, the fire in the stone fireplace creates a cozy atmosphere. Today, the lights in Casa Špilja are sure to stay on for a long time.
